Registrar demoted because of her faith awaits decision following internal appeal hearing

On 8th December 2009, Theresa Davies, Deputy Registrar with Islington Borough Council, attended an internal appeal hearing in relation to the Council’s decision to demote her because of her refusal to preside over same sex civil partnership ceremonies. The hearing was the last in a series of internal meetings which have been held in an attempt to resolve Theresa’s complaint that the Council’s actions discriminate against her because she is a Christian.

A fundamental issue was raised in this case as to whether Christian faith presents a bar to Governmental and numerous private sector employments. In a number of recent decisions it has been held lawful for an employer to require employees to adhere to an Equal Opportunities Policy, and compel Christians to support the practice of sexual conduct that they believe is sinful. In short, a condition of employment will be the support of practices contrary to their faith. These rulings will drive many Christians out of many employments; and in an age in which the Government is an important employer, a significant restriction on our liberties is taking place.

We expect to know the outcome of the internal appeal hearing in the New Year.  Theresa is also pursuing a claim in the Employment Tribunal for religious discrimination. She is being supported by the Christian Legal Centre.

Please pray for Islington Borough Council, that they can make a brave decision supporting freedom of religion.
